That’s it. I am fed up. I am taking back the word “Christian”.
Whether you realize it or not, we are in the season, or maybe era, of who-gets-to-use-what-word. The Conservatives of this country have been on a rampage to keep gay people from using the word “Marriage” (although many of them are changing their minds).
The Associated Press just took back the word “Homophobia”. They aren’t going to use it and what’s more, they don’t want you to either. “It’s just off the mark,” said AP deputy standards editor Dave Minthorn to Politico. “It’s ascribing a mental disability to someone and suggests a knowledge that we don’t have. It seems inaccurate. Instead, we would use something more neutral: antigay, or some such, if we had reason to believe that was the case.”
So. I am taking back the word “Christian”. It is no longer to be used in conjunction with certain individuals. I have always allowed others to define themselves, but to me, a Christian is one who philosophically lives by two Christ Principles: Love God above all else, and Love Your Neighbor as Yourself. That is not just my idea. Jesus Christ is the one who set those standards, I am merely reminding you of them. If someone lives by those, and wants to be called a “Christian”… great. I’m onboard.
I am no longer on board with calling people who are elitist and evil “Christian” however just because they insist that we do. No more. They have to earn it.
Uganda wants to imprison gay people for life, or kill them if they are HIV positive. They are NOT Christian. Barbaric, evil, despicable, grotesque…. But NOT Christian.
Tony Perkins responds “American liberals are upset that Ugandan Pres is leading his nation in repentence—afraid of a modern example of a nation prospered by God?” That statement is NOT said by someone who has the right to be called “Christian”. An American Taliban, a Heretic, an Opportunistic Slime… sure, but NOT a “Christian”.
Bryan Fischer says “Homosexuality now against the law in Uganda, just as it was for 200 years in the US. It can be done.” He is NOT “Christian”. Evil, nutty, extremist…. Yes. He does not deserve to be called “Christian”.
Scott Lively who says, “This is a huge blessing for Uganda and for me personally after having been vilified globally (and falsely) for two years by the leftist media as the accused mastermind of the death penalty provision. Please give this story your best push for maximum exposure. “ He is NOT “Christian”. If a man acts and speaks like a terrorist, let’s take a page from the accuracy of the Associated Press and call him one.
The Elitist Religious Fanatics of the U.S. (see how easy that was?) have been all in a twit over people refusing to use the word “Christmas” in commercial retail transactions (oddly, an insistence of which is not “Christian” in itself). I say we go one better and withhold the use of the word “Christian” ONLY for the people who act, espouse and represent it accurately.
We are, after all, in the Age of Word Accuracy.
So, please, I seriously implore you, if you write… please refuse to call any one “Christian” unless they meet the Christ principle standards to do so. Please pass this standard on to all others you know who write… and to news organizations… and petition the Associated Press.

To use the word principles as given by Mr. Minthorn, to call any of the men I have described in this article, or any of the millions of Americans who agree with them, “Christians” would be “ascribing a philosophy to someone and suggests a knowledge that we don’t have and is not apparent. It seems inaccurate. Instead, we would use something more neutral: “seething idiots”, or some such, if we had reason to believe that was the case.”
And, I am not kidding…..share this, share this, share this… until the Seething Idiots get the message.

I once knew a self-professed “Christian” woman who was always warning me about “the Devil.” She went on and on about the “Power of Satan” and how Satan used many ways and guises to get people to come to him. One day I asked her if God was very powerful and she said,”Yes, of course!” I asked her if God used many ways and guises to get people to come to him and she answered the same, “Yes!” I asked her if her telling me about God’s power and the many ways he got people to come to hin was a form of worship. “Yes” she told me. “It’s the main way I can worship him, by telling of his power and bringing people to him!”
Then I asked, “If by saying God is powerful and uses many ways to draw people to him is worshipping God, what do you call it when you go on and on about the great power of Satan and how he uses many ways to draw people to him?” She had no answer but to sputter, “You don’t understand!”
I agree that to be a Christian one must follow after Christ and His teachings. What LGBT people and their supporters don’t understand or perhaps misrepresent is the fact that Jesus came to pay the price for our sins not condone them. Did Jesus hate the woman He saved from being stoned (John 8) when He told her to go and sin no more? Is it love to see a drug addict and condone his drug use or buy him more drugs?
The Bible is clear that homosexuality is a sin just as it is clear that fornication, adultery, and all sex outside of marriage between a man and woman, which Christ upheld (Matt 19:4-6) is sinful. Notice Christ said that marriage was for one man and one woman from the beginning, not for two people who love each other no matter sex or marital status. Was Christ hateful when He said that?
LGBT people are made in thr image of God just like everyone else and therefore deserve love and respect like all of God’s people but please do not accuse me of being unChrist-like when I am following His commands on homosexuality and all other things, through His Grace, when I follow after the Word of God.
I don’t expect you to agree but rest assure that I am not homophobic. I do not fear homosexuals. I do not hate you because I disagree with you either. I love you. In fact, I love you all enough to tell you about God’s plan of salvation that He has made available to all of us sinners through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Take it or leave it. The choice is yours and I only hope that you choose the gift of eternal life so that I can see you all enjoying eternity with me. May God give you the truth and may you receive it. Peace.

Thank you very much for the discussion, and your sincere desire to share Truth as you believe it to be. I see several areas of disagreement. Before Jesus suggested to the woman that she may want to reconsider her life, he specifically told her “neither do I judge ye”. The people who want to make that story about judgement seem to always forget that, and want to go on telling others how to live.
I don’t think that LGBT people are any more aware/unaware of Jesus’s sacrifices, they just don’t believe that Jesus died for things in their lives, that heterosexuals get to enjoy as “not sins”. You are incorrect on what the Bible says about homosexuality. As a start to look into that further, please see the great articles on evoL= by Thomas Ross. There are others also that confirm his opinion including work by Matthew Vines and many others. I am not asking you to accept that blindly, but definitely you need to do the research before blindly deciding that a superficial reading of out of context passages and prejudiced hand-me-down urban legends are things you should be asking others to change their lives over. I am glad that you have the confidence that you are grasping eternity and want to share it. I think there are deeper values that Christ gave us in his two Commandments and I pray you find those nuances here on earth before you pack up for the great hereafter. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
Being who you are meant to be and what is truth in your life is not sin. Try to understand that. I know it’s hard because you are not homosexual. But if you were it would be like being judged a sinner for having blonde hair or for being short.

And some times the attachment of christians to their believes facing new problems introduced to them may have it's benefit…
So we all Christians and not Christians we should remember we are all humans and not easy to get into new Ideas especially if we already conceder it as a danger against us…
hmmm…thinking about this I feel like whenever those hateful people who call themselves Christian talk about how the devil is at work when we talk about love and non judgment of our LGBT brothers and sisters and is actually them who the devil is working through, because they are denying Christ’s own commandments to us…so I say lets call them what they are…demon seed bigots!!

Look up the word “Gay” in the Oxford Dictionary of at least 10 years ago, nowhere does it mention the word Homosexual, later versions tell us that gay is a slang term for homosexual. I agree with the article, most who call them selves “Christian” are very far from it.
sad to see this is misrepresenting Jesus for He said in Luke 5:31 Jesus answered and said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.” What this is is showing you must REPENT.

Are you saying that Jesus did NOT give us the two commandments that the Bible said He did? I am not at all clear on your quote in relationship to the article either, it does not address anything on the subject at hand.

I find it interesting that robw77 wants to ‘take back’ Christians. Is he also prepared to give ‘gay’ back the original Old High German meaning? From my reading of the Bible, the definition of a Christian is very clear. John 14:6 establishes the standards to be a Christian, but being a Christian requires no set behavior.
Hi Don, thank you for the discussion. I am not clear on the non sequiter on the word “gay” especially since you are tracking “gay” meaning happy, and not the origin of “gay” meaning homosexual. I am also unclear as to your point since there is no philosophical code attached to being homosexual or heterosexual, but there is to being Christian, and that is the subject. With all due respect, your reading of the Bible does not seem to be any clearer than your reading of this article. The quote you gave (and, please be polite to others and actually QUOTE your quote…) is not a definition of a “Christian”, but Jesus defining who HE is. That was not the subject here, nor under dispute. Thank you for the discussion.
I love the photo you posted! Even as a child, I didn’t ‘get’ what they tried to teach me in church. It didn’t jive with my soul somehow. The only parts that ever made sense to me were the two principles – love God, love your neighbor. I know there are many like me, too.

I think this is so good, too many people want to be called Christian and decribe themselves as Christian but the are not, the do not follow Christs teachings. Too many so called Christiand are just in it for the money. They run churches and receive payment for the work they do in their church. This is not following Christ this is employment
I strongly disagree with the statement that the AP “Took back the word homophobia”. They aren’t taking anything back – they are denying the existence of the phenomenon. That is far different than what you are doing with the word Christian.
I don’t think the AP is denying the existence of anything. They aren’t denying that anti-gay sentiment exists, they are just saying that the word homophobia doesn’t accurately describe it. They’re essentially acknowledging the quote that is attributed to Morgan Freeman: “You aren’t homophobic. It’s not of phobia. You’re not scared. You’re just an asshole”
